January. Hearts Breaking. |
It breaks our hearts to feel compelled to acknowledge here in our purposefully joyful Hamptons newsletter that we are living in a world that seems to have tilted off its axis. But we cannot naively start the new year leaning into the old bromide that “A new broom sweeps clean.” Not that simple when the world is swept-up in such painful conflict. |
That said, we are lucky enough to be living our lives in one of the most amazing places on this big chaotic planet and we start our year fighting our own kind of battles. Lest anyone doubt that Climate Change is reaching deep into our sheltered lives, one only has to note that we are currently fighting to save our Hydrangea buds from another season of early-bloom/frost-bite. We’re getting advice from the best arborists and landscapers, because this is a “war” we intend to win. |
And if that isn’t enough to worry about, then join us in our lament that it’s January 1, and it still hasn’t been cold enough for our fireplace flue to draw without smoking. The flames that we cozied up to during the holidays were a digital shame! So we begin our new year trying hard to put all this into perspective. If you’re lucky enough to go to sleep (even some nights) worrying about Hydrangeas, then, like us,.........you are indeed lucky enough. |
Look closely, a digital shame. |

Fill Your Heart, This Movie Will. |
When we stumbled upon the NETFLIX film RUSTIN, we had our hearts filled with
admiration for the protagonist Bayard Rustin who endured racism and homophobia as he helped change the course of human history by orchestrating the 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. King told the world of his dreams for all mankind. Coleman Domingo is exuberant in the lead. We could let you be surprised, as we were, to learn in the closing credits that Barack and Michelle were executive producers, but we share it with you here hoping it will encourage you to see it. Last year we declared that the new Sant Ambroeus in East Hampton was the real “keeper” of the new crop of Hamptons Restaurants.......but alas it is, by any standard, tres cher. So we are thrilled to send you all out to try KIZZY T'S, (47 Montauk Highway, across from REDHORSE MARKET) where a modest menu of joyful treats is priced for mortals. They are striving to be a “neighborhood pub” and are off to a good start with perhaps the best salad we’ve ever had at any price here in The Hamptons. (A hearty bowl of Little Gem Lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, and pickled onions, $14.) |

This is part of the team that has thrilled us all with SEN in Sag Harbor, so you will surely find a new favorite as we did with their KFC-style chicken sandwich, $15. We’ve put the prices here to make the point that KIZZY T'S, thrills the senses without breaking the bank. (How refreshing!) Click here to view their menu. |

Join Us In Supporting..... For The Right Reason. |
Our friends and neighbors called us in early October with an urgent plea. They were providing their Israeli sister with an emergency “port in the storm.” Pulling car seats for the little ones from our shed was the easy part. But where was a three year old that only speaks Hebrew going to meaningfully spend his days? THE ELEANORE WHITMORE EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER in East Hampton parted the sea and welcomed him with open arms. We are proud to have regularly suggested that THE CENTER is worthy of your largesse, and even more proud of our dear friend, Ken Quay, who gives so much of himself as a long-standing member of their board. THE ELEANORE WHITMORE CENTER is a “beating heart” that breathes much life into our community. Join us in celebrating the New Year by giving generously. |

If you missed MAESTRO in the theater, then find it tonight streaming into your living room. As if his Director/Star turn in the recent A STAR IS BORN didn’t establish him as one of Hollywood’s leading lights, Bradley Cooper literally devours the script of MAESTRO, the story of Leonard Bernstein’s life of glorious achievements and personal challenges. Click here to view the trailer. Be looking for Cooper and his costar Carey Mulligan, to get “His and Her's” oscars.....a rarity in film. (Only seven times in Oscar history, most recently in 1997 for Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt in AS GOOD AS IT GETS.) |

But tune in to see the revamped and revitalized GOLDEN GLOBES on January 7th. We’ll be watching because we simply love cinema, and are enthralled by this new “Golden Age” of TV. But we’ll also be looking for affirmation of the many recommendations we’ve made here in this newsletter. You will also no doubt see Hollywood struggle (as we are here) with celebrating the New Year with the world in chaos. |
