NOVEMBER. Like the rest of the world around us, we are starting to prepare for the Holidays......that’s simply what we do this time of year. But we also look out our window every morning and watch all creatures large and small preparing for the winter ahead. Unfortunately not everyone in our community has the wherewithal or the means to plan for a challenging winter...so this month’s newsletter will end with links to our local food pantries, and we encourage all of our readers to reach deep and support those among us that need even the basics during the months ahead. But we also have much to report, with elections ahead, and having discovered new restaurants, new shows and even a new (to us) theater to share with you.....so read on. |

Nothing More Important Than This! |
Vote. Yep, Tuesday, Nov. 7 is election day. And it’s estimated that, sadly enough, only one-fourth the number of people who vote during Presidential election years will make it to the polls next week. So your vote actually counts four times as much if you do vote. We’re electing the local people that will drive the direction of our individual communities. What could be more important than that? We ask you all to especially focus on the County Executive race. Suffolk County is the largest county in the state without a major municipality. So the County Executive is like the Mayor of the whole East End. Read up and make your own choice, but VOTE! |

What Makes A Restaurant A 'Winter Restaurant'? |
It isn’t just the menu that drives us to different restaurants as the weather changes. It’s the overall feeling of warmth and comfort. You’ll find us at Dowling’s, Bell & Anchor, and The East Hampton Grill among others. But the “Heavy Weight Champ” of winter rooms is Leon 1909 on Shelter Island. Their wood-burning open-hearth oven is like a giant fireplace that seduces you the moment you walk in the door. We’re not big dessert eaters, but last week we ordered the Lemon Tart and the Chocolate Cake.....because we simply didn’t want to leave! Click here to view their website. |

What We're Watching Right Now. |
LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY, Apple TV’s 8-episode series based on Bonnie Garmus’s best selling book, and starring Academy Award winner Brie Larson is at its midway point as we write this. We are smitten and you will be too.....literally can’t wait for the next episode. A shining light in this incredible Golden Age of home entertainment. Larson fully inhabits her character in this tightly-woven story.....about a tightly-wound resolutely independent woman. Click here to watch the trailer. |

DON’T MISS THIS PLAY. CLOSES SAT! We’re supposed to be on top of the cultural landscape out here on the East End. In fact, many of our readers tell us that they count on us to keep them posted. But neither of us had ever seen a production of THE HAMPTON THEATRE COMPANY in Quogue. To say that we were delighted by their rendition of Neil Simon’s final play, ROSE AND WALSH is an understatement. This is community theater at its very best. The material finds Simon striking a balance between his unfailing comedic voice, and a heartfelt discourse on the bonds between people, be it life-long lovers or parents and their children. The theater, housed in the Quogue Community Hall, is welcoming and comfortable. Rosemary Cline’s Rose Steiner is worth the drive all by itself. Sadly, it only runs til this Saturday 11/5. Get tickets and Go! Click here for tickets and reviews. |

How proud are we of our dear friend Vicki Schneps, the Publisher of Dan’s
Papers. Last week we ventured to Garden City where Life’s WORC, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights of people with special needs, chose to name its Headquarter Building after Vicki, acknowledging her as not just the founder but also for her lifetime commitment and relentless leadership and support. We’ve long admired her drive and her passion for Dan’s Papers (and her 80+ media outlets), but the more we learn about her, the more we are honored to be among her many friends. After listening to NYC Mayor Eric Adams speak about her at the naming ceremony, we couldn’t help but reflect with amazement that she is still in the vital years of a life well-lived. A shining example for us all. Click here to see how you can help Life’s WORC. |

November. This is the month we always share our love for Norman Rockwell’s brilliant illustrations of Franklin Roosevelt’s monumental “Four Freedoms.” With Thanksgiving around the corner, we should have our hearts and minds on this one: Freedom from Want.
But, sadly enough, we end this month’s narrative noting that, 80 years later, Rockwell’s illustration of Roosevelt’s unfulfilled promise of Freedom from Fear is unfortunately both timely and universal. God help us......literally. |
