New York City March Calendar of Unique and Charitable Events |

|
With Spring around the corner, looking at this month's Calendar of Unique and Charitable Events will inspire even the groundhog to come out of its winter nesting place - especially to enjoy the Cherry Blossom Festival! The cherry blossom, or sakura in Japanese, is one of the most popular symbols of Japan and one of Japan's national flowers. Sakura may also be Japan's greatest gift to the United States. In 1912, Japan gave the U.S. 3,020 cherry trees to celebrate the enduring friendship shared by our two countries. Those sakura that came to NY were planted in what is now known as Sakura Park (a.k.a. Cherry Blossom Park) in 1912, located in Manhattan's Upper Westside. Today, sakura trees are planted in parks across New York City and the country, becoming a living symbol of Japan-U.S. friendship. Rooted strongly and surviving outside elements, the trees have withstood the test of time – and more than a century later, the National Cherry Blossom Festival is preparing for unprecedented celebrations. A variety of events commemorating the cherry blossoms and Japan-US friendship are planned for this historic occasion throughout the month and throughout the city. (mommypoppins.com.)
While there are Cherry Blossom celebrations throughout NYC, the cherry blossom trees in Central Park are truly breathtaking and can be found mainly between 72nd Street and 96th Street, with the highest concentrations around the Reservoir, Cherry Hill, Pilgrim Hill, Great Lawn, Cedar Hill, and the area just south of Cedar Hill between 74th and 77th Streets. What a wonderful way to usher in the Spring! (mommypoppins.com.)
